Introduction The curriculum in Years 8 and 9 at St Norbert College is based on the firm foundation of knowledge and skills developed in the Junior School. The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of young students who will live and work in the 21st century. It is contemporary in nature and incorporates the use of learning technologies in order to equip our students to be successful in their life beyond school.
Curriculum
The Middle School Curriculum has been developed within the framework of the principles of Catholic Education. Religious Education is the first Learning Area in Catholic schools and reflects the requirements set out in the Bishop’s Mandate for Catholic Education in Western Australia.
The Curriculum Framework also informs the construction and presentation of our Curriculum. The courses at St Norbert College are developed from the Learning Area outcomes as contained in this document.
Most courses are year long. • The Arts • English • Health and Physical Education • Languages Other Than English • Mathematics • Science • Society and Environment • Technology and Enterprise
Catering for Individuals Classes are structured around key principles which support learning. Students are given opportunities to engage fully with the concepts and processes they are to learn and develop. These learning experiences will connect with and challenge individual student’s present knowledge, skills and values. This results in programs that accommodate the diverse background experiences that students bring to the classroom.
To further cater for the individual needs of students, classes in English, Science, Mathematics and Society and Environment are divided into support classes (with approximately 15 students); 3 or 4 mainstream classes and one extension class. Students are placed in these classes based on results from the previous year or in the case of Year 7 students, on the test administered on Orientation Day. Movement is possible between classes and usually happens at the end of each Semester on teacher recommendation.
Period Allocation Middle School There are 30 periods in a week. These periods are divided up to accommodate the range of courses that we offer at St Norbert College.
English, Mathematics, Society and Environment, and Science have 4 periods each week. Religious Education and Health and Health and Physical Education each have a 3 period allocation.
Students are able to select 4 Electives in each year. Each Elective has a 2 period allocation.
Electives
In addition to Religious Education, English, Maths, Science, Society and Environment, Health and Physical Education, students will choose from a range of electives. These Electives run for a semester. Students must select at least one Elective from Technology and Enterprise, The Arts and LOTE to study for one semester. They may choose to study the same Elective for the whole year.

Subject Selection Sheet An important aspect of enrolling a student for any year is to complete a subject selection sheet. Specific instructions on how to choose electives is given on the sheet and thus it complements the information in this Handbook.
A date is specified for the return of the sheet to the College. It is important to meet this deadline.
Students are informed of their electives by the end of the year.
