The College provides co-curricular activities in an attempt to provide the best possible education and a range of experiences in an attempt to develop our students into well-rounded young adults. Due to the nature of co-curricular activities some of these activities may not be offered every year and others may be introduced during the year.
ACADEMIC
WA Junior Mathematics Olympiad Competition
The Junior Mathematics Olympiad Competition is organised by the WA Section of the Australian Mathematics Olympiad Committee. The competition is a problem solving competition with four teams of four representatives from Year 8 and Year 9. The competition consists of individual and team questions. Team and individual prizes are given. The best performing students will be invited to attend the Mathematical Olympiad Problem-Solving Program.
Hammarskjold Trophy
Is an initiative of the United Nations Youth Association of Western Australia. Students participate in mock Security Council sessions and debate current issues and resolutions before the UN. Teams scoring well through their research and conduct will progress to the state final and on to the national final. The Hammarskjold Trophy allows involvement with students from other schools and combines debating and persuasive conversation from the view point of selected countries. There are some practical expectations involved. Students are expected to:
· Attend an information session at UWA
· Prepare background information on the countries and issues
· Work in partnership with a team mate to enhance your countries position
· Attend UWA on a Saturday to participate in the trophy session
Debating
An in-school Debating Competition is available to Year 8 to Year 12 students. This competition encourages students to develop their communication and language skills.
Have Sum Fun Mathematics Competition
Organised by the Mathematical Association of WA. The competition is a problem solving competition with two teams of six representatives, consisting of two students from each of Years 8, 9 and 10 and three students from years 11 and 12. Team prizes are given. Students are selected by the College Mathematics Learning Area.
Western Australian Schools Constitutional Convention
The Convention normally addresses a key political issue. A series of workshops will explore the issue and enable students to contribute to a debate. Background papers are posted to participants prior to the conference to give students time to become familiar with the topics that will form the basis of the workshop.
SPORT
Interschool Carnivals
Three major carnivals under the organisation of the Associated and Catholic Colleges (ACC) enable our most interested and talented students to represent their College at an Interschool level. The carnivals include Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics.
There is also provision for talented students to be representatives in Associated and Catholic College Teams and State teams.
For all Year 8 and Year 9 students the opportunity to compete in an ACC Lightning Carnival takes place in Term 2. Sports included are football, soccer, hockey, netball and softball. Senior students studying Year 11 and Year 12 Physical Education Studies have the opportunity to be involved in leadership tasks involving team coaching and umpiring.
Interschool Sport
The College participates in many sporting competitions as part of the Southern Associated Schools Competition. Each year, the College nominates sides to participate in a variety of different team sports. These may include: Football
The senior football side competes in the “Smarter than Smoking Cup” competition and the Year 8/9 football team represents the College in the Channel 7 Cup. Volleyball
Girls’ and Boys’ volleyball teams participate in the Senior Volleyball League. Soccer
Boy’s Junior and Senior Soccer teams and girls Senior Soccer compete in the Champion Schools’ Competitions.
Netball
Students from all year levels participate in Interschool competitions. Basketball
Junior and Senior boys and girls compete in an Inrterschool competition Specialised Basketball Program
Students have the opportunity to trial and be selected in our Specialised Basketball Program in Years 8– 12. Classes provide expert coaching and teams play in a Saturday Competition. Applications and trials occur in Term 2 for the following year’s intake. House Sport
In addition to the formal sporting program, the College runs a lunchtime House Sport competition each term for students of all year levels. Some of the sports featured include netball, soccer, tug of war and indoor soccer.
ACC Cross Country Team
Students are selected from performances in the Inter-House Cross Country competition and timed 1.6 km time trials.
ACC Swimming Team
Students are chosen from performances in the Inter-House Swimming Carnival and Time Trials to represent the College against other similar Colleges.
ACC Athletics Team
Students are chosen from performances in the Inter-House Athletics Carnival to represent the College in an Athletics meet against other Colleges.
ACC Lighting Carnivals
Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports against other similar Colleges.
Saint Swim Squad
This squad is a developmental swimming squad designed for students to improve physical fitness and their swimming technique. Training occurs before school with a qualified swimming coach.
Dance Program
An after school dance program supplementing classroom learning or interest in dance. Any student is welcome to join the group to improve fitness and dance skills.
Belt-Up Cup Football
A Football Competition for boys in Years 10, 11 and 12 representing the College in the interschool football.
Smarter than Smoking Football
Junior Football Competition for all WA schools for Years 8 and 9 boys. Students are selected after trials to represent the College.
CULTURAL
Music
The Music Program caters for students both from within the College and from neighbouring Catholic Primary Schools. Professional tutors cover a wide range of instruments, including flute, clarinet, acoustic/electric guitar, drums and percussion, keyboards, trumpet, trombone, violin, viola, double bass, saxophone, electric bass and voice. Our aim is to enhance personal growth in students through creative and interactive music-making experiences.
Interactive groups include string, popular, junior and senior concert and choir ensembles. The Music Program is represented in the Annual Music Nights, Lunchtime Concerts, the Catholic Performing Arts Festival for Schools and Colleges, official school events such as Benediction, St Norbert Day, Year 12 Graduation, Presentation Night and participates in several community events throughout the year.
Chess Club
Keen Chess players meet each lunchtime to practise their skills. They participate in a number of competitions against other schools.
SOCIAL JUSTICE
Benenson Society
A social justice group which addresses concerns regarding political prisoners world-wide. On a weekly basis letters are written to various governments about illegal imprisonment, detention, torture, death penalties with the aim of prioritising for them the need to respect human rights.
Young Vinnies
Like all St Vincent De Paul Societies throughout the world, the mission of Young Vinnies is to help those in need. Students collect food, blankets and clothes for disadvantaged people in the community, raise money and organise the annual Winter Sleep-out and the Fun Day Out. Young Vinnies members are concerned about poverty and injustice and become involved both in short-term alleviation and long-term answers.
TOURS
History Tour
Available to Year 11 and 12 History students. This trip enables students to experience our historical heritage first hand with visits to Canberra and Melbourne. Students are eligible for credit towards an Endorsed Program.
Japanese Exchange Program
Exchange trip to Japan. This is the 30th year that students have visited Immaculate College in Kagoshima. Senior students have the opportunity to improve their oral language skills.
Japanese Hosting Program
Hosting students from Japan. Each February students from Immaculate College are hosted by the St Norbert College families.
Italian Exchange Program
This program is organised through the WAATI/Intercultural Exchange. Prospective students from St Norbert College intending to visit Italy are required to complete application forms in Term 3. Part of the application involves an interview with the applicant to assess their suitability for the Italian Exchange Program.
Italian Hosting Program
This Program provides an opportunity for St Norbert families to host an Italian Exchange student. This generally occurs in Term 3 and requires the host families to provide a positive and welcoming environment which offers an Australian immersion experience for the Italian Exchange students.
Warmum Experience
A Year 11 Christian Service Learning Immersion Experience. Every two years, six Year 11 students and two staff fly to Kununurra and then drive down to Warmun Aboriginal Community the following day (approximately 2.5 hours). The group are in Warmun for five days. Approximately 70% of the time is spent giving service to the community and 30% is spent exploring the culture and landscape of the area.
Pilgrimage of Hope
In January each year, a small group of St Norbert College students join with approximately sixty other young people from various colleges around Australia to travel to India and give service in Kolkata for three and a half weeks.
